Why Does My Dog Bark at Other Dogs?

5 min read

Most dogs that bark and lunge at other dogs are reactive, not aggressive. The behavior is usually driven by frustration (they want to greet but can't), fear (they want space), or over-arousal — not a desire to fight. Training helps by building neutrality and teaching your dog what to do instead.

Frustration, fear, or over-arousal

A frustrated dog strains toward other dogs because it desperately wants to say hi. A fearful dog barks to make the scary thing go away. An over-aroused dog simply can't regulate itself. These look similar on the leash but need different handling — which is why understanding the 'why' comes first.

What helps and what backfires

Working at a distance your dog can handle, rewarding calm attention, and gradually closing the gap builds real neutrality. Yanking, yelling, or dragging your dog past other dogs usually adds stress and makes the reaction worse over time.
