How to Potty Train a Puppy

5 min read

Potty train a puppy with three things: close supervision, a consistent schedule (out after waking, eating, and playing), and immediate reward for going in the right spot. Use a crate or confinement when you can't watch, and prevent accidents rather than punishing them — punishment teaches puppies to hide, not to hold.

Build a rhythm

Take your puppy out first thing in the morning, after every nap, after meals, after play, and before bed. Go to the same spot, wait, and reward calmly the instant they finish so they connect the reward to the act.

Manage accidents the right way

Accidents are a supervision gap, not defiance. When you can't watch, use a crate or a small confined space — most puppies won't soil where they rest. Clean accidents with an enzymatic cleaner so lingering scent doesn't invite a repeat.

Never punish after the fact. A puppy can't connect a scolding to something that happened minutes ago; it only learns to be nervous around you.
